“This meeting is to talk business and best practices for the company moving forward.”

My father stood at the podium, looking down at us as we waited for his next sentence as if it were our next breath. This was what we’d been waiting on from him, begging for. Tyson stood beside me with his arms crossed over his chest, swaying in his stance as my father looked down at us. This day was overdue, and even though I didn’t know what my father was about to say, I was happy we were finally getting some answers.

My father, who always seemed bigger than every room he ever stood in, seemed small today. His shoulders were lowered, and though he smiled, I could see the pain in his eyes. It was as if parts of him were being chipped away as he stood before me. He gripped the podium he stood behind, the veins in his arms straining as he took in a deep, shaky breath. “We will be making some changes to the face of Morrison Construction, allowing my two sons Tyson and Axel to take over as CEOs of the company. My partner and I are stepping aside, due to personal reasons of our own.” I could hear the pain in his voice with every syllable he spoke. This was a hard decision for him, and I still wasn’t clear on why he was making it or what exactly it was he wanted me to do now that he was retiring. Was he retiring? Though this meeting was supposed to give me answers, it was opening my brain up to more questions than resolutions. “Now, as I said Rus and I are stepping aside, which means we are not stepping down or away from the company. We will ensure that both Axel and Tyson are completely prepared to take over our roles before we completely retire from the company. I want to ensure each of you that your position with the company or tenure for that matter will not be tampered with in any way at all. Everything will go on business as usual with no changes to your pay or benefits. The only people impacted by this change will be Axel and Tyson, who we plan to begin preparing for this change in the coming weeks but even for them, their roles won’t be much different from what they do now.” Again, he took in a laboring breath before looking out at us, seemingly admiring the work he’d put in over the years. I watched my father build this company from the ground up, so I knew this change was hard for him. I found myself admiring his strength differently at this moment. “The floor is open for any questions you guys may have.”

Of course, there were a dozen questions that were asked and properly answered. Tyson and I walked off, waiting in a corner for my father to finish addressing everyone else before he made his way to us.
